Magic. We mention it often in our articles, as we did in our last one, and it feels like the perfect time to reflect on what magic truly means. Not to define it for everyone, magic is deeply personal, and its meaning is yours to discover, but to share how we, at New England Fable, perceive it.
Magic Without
Think back to your childhood. Was there a shadowy basement that made your heart race? A forbidden room in your grandparents' house, filled with mysteries you weren't allowed to explore? Or maybe a pond where sunlight danced so perfectly that you imagined faeries leaping from one golden ripple to the next? As a child, you created magic effortlessly. It was in the spaces between moments, in the “what ifs” and endless possibilities.
Like Fox Mulder in The X-Files, who kept alive the mantra “I Want to Believe,” children live in a world where Bigfoot might just be behind the next tree, and the Loch Ness Monster could be lurking just under the lake’s surface. Magic is the glimmer of possibility, what might exist, just out of reach, around the next bend.
Even as adults, we can return to that Little World of imagination. Yes, we might rationalize that there’s no monster under the bed. But what harm is there in letting ourselves believe, even fleetingly, that magic dances in the world around us? Sometimes, it’s worth stepping away from seriousness to let the wonder creep back in.
Magic Within
Magic isn’t only in the world around us, it’s within us, too. In the earlier paragraphs, you might have noticed how much magic begins with our own imagination, our sense of wonder, and our choice to believe.
But inner magic doesn’t stop at imagination. It’s in the choices you make for yourself. In a world that loves to dictate what you should be or how you should act, there’s magic in standing firm. When you decide to get that bold haircut despite the disapproving looks, or when you unapologetically embrace your true self, you’re wielding your personal magic. Defying expectations and manifesting your authentic self is an act of profound power.
This magic also lives in what you create. The poems you write, the sweaters you knit, the doodles you make while daydreaming, all of these are expressions of your unique magic. It’s easy to let these gifts feel ordinary, but they’re anything but. You bring something into the world that wasn’t there before, and that’s extraordinary.
Even if you’re not “great” at painting or crafting, it doesn’t diminish the magic in the act itself. As we say in our About section, you don’t need a checklist of reasons to call yourself a witch. Similarly, you don’t need to justify your magic, it’s yours, and it’s enough just as it is.
Within/Without
We cheer you on as you discover and embrace your magic, as you weave it into your life. Even if you feel like there’s no one in your corner, know this: we’re here, quietly cheering from the sidelines, whether you see us or not. Through your strength, confidence, power, and even your vulnerability, we hope you step into the fullness of who you are, unapologetically, beautifully, and entirely you.
With all our love,
New England Fable
